Samsung’s new smartwatch is sophisticated built in a more compact and sleek design that makes it more comfortable to wear. The 11.3mm thick Galaxy Watch 3 is slimmer than 13mm thick Galaxy Watch. Galaxy Watch 3 also weighs slightly less at 53.8g (45mm) and 48g (41mm) compares to 63g (46mm).
Subsequently, instead of silicone straps that come with Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch 3 comes with leather straps. Strap sizes remain the same.
The very interesting physical rotating bezel present on Galaxy Watch is also present on Galaxy Watch 3. However, it’s now slimmer and smoother. Moreover, you can navigate and operate Galaxy Watch 3 with the physical rotating bezel without touching the display.
Both smartwatches are rated 5ATM and certified MIL-STD-810G.
The Galaxy Watch 3 is a more complete fitness tracker than Galaxy Watch. Basically, both smartwatches will track your steps, distance, calories, stress, heart rate, sleep, and feature preset workout modes as well as have inbuilt GPS that allows you to track outdoor events.
However, Galaxy Watch 3 also features all the fitness tracking features that were introduced to Galaxy Active 2 which includes running coach, blood pressure monitoring, and ECG tracking that was recently cleared by the FDA. Moreover, Samsung has added new health-tracking features that include blood oxygen monitoring, incidental fall detection that can call emergency when it detects a trip, fitness level (VO2 Max.), and expands on the running coach which gives you real-time feedback on your pace and form. The first update to Galaxy Watch 3 has added VO2 Max., blood oxygen monitoring, and more.
Also new is the 120 preloaded workout modes that allow you to cast workout videos to your TV through the Samsung Health app, then display your training stats on the TV as you train.
Galaxy Watch 3 has twice the storage capacity of Galaxy Watch. It comes with 8GB compared to 4GB of Galaxy Watch.
Both smartwatches have microphones and loudspeakers. You can make and receive calls from the Bluetooth model of both watches by connecting to your phone Bluetooth, while the LTE models of both smartwatches is a stand-alone smartwatch that allows you to make and receive calls without your phone.
Galaxy Watch 3 is powered by the same Exynos 9110 chip just like Galaxy Watch, however, it runs on Tizen OS 5.5 out of the box compared to Tizen 4.0 of its predecessor.
The new OS brings new UI features that can improve your productive life such as the new feature that allows you to see chat history alongside a supporting image. There’s also the Bitmoji that offers a more fun way to communicate.
Galaxy Watch 3 is slimmer and more compact, and the price to pay for that sleeker and elegant design is that it comes with a smaller battery capacity of 340mah which Samsung claims can last up to 2 days. This is a shorter battery life than Galaxy Watch with a 470mAh battery capacity that last up to 4 days on average
Should You Upgrade?
Galaxy Watch 3 is a more sophisticated and attractive smartwatch than it’s predecessor. It’s slimmer, more compact, and weighs a little less. It also has more health tracking features and bigger storage that improves its performance. On that note, Galaxy Watch 3 is clearly better than Galaxy Watch. It’s a better bargain if you need more from a smartwatch and willing to sacrifice battery life.
On the other hand, Galaxy Watch is still one of the best smartwatches on the market. It’ll not receive many of the fitness tracking present on Galaxy Watch such as blood pressure monitoring, ECG, blood oxygen and incidental fall detection. which is a reason to upgrade. However, if you want more battery life, then Galaxy Watch remains a great choice.
