So guys, 2 years after, Huawei has just unveiled the Watch 5 — the much anticipated successor to the Huawei Watch 4.
The new watch looks very similar to its predecessor, however, it welcomes an X-tap tactile sensor, new hand gestures, multi-band GPS, and is now available in two sizes.
In this post, we take a look at what is new to help you decide if it is a worthy upgrade.
Huawei Watch 4 vs 5 – Differences
Design
Looking at the design, the Huawei Watch 5 is still very durable just like its predecessor. Though, unlike the Watch 4, it is now available in 42 and 46mm sizes. And it is also now available in titanium build.
The Purple and Silver colors of the 46mm size have a titanium case with sapphire glass screen, while the Beige and Sand gold colors of the 42mm size have a 904L stainless steel build and Corning Gorilla Glass screen.
Though the Blue and Black colors of the 46mm and the White, Green and Black colors of the 42mm size have a 316L stainless steel case with Corning Gorilla Glass screen.

The Watch 5 like its predecessor is rated 5ATM, but it now supports diving up to 40 meters.
Display
There is some significant improvement in the display department. The Watch 5 has an improved LTPO 2.0 AMOLED display. The display is also brighter at 3000 nits — a significant improvement from the 2000 nits of its predecessor.
Activity tracking
In the activity tracking department, like its predecessor, the Watch 5 can track your sleep, steps, heart rate, ECG, skin temperature, stress and blood oxygen.
However, the biggest difference between the Watch 5 and 4 is the addition of the X-TAP sensor which combines ECG, PPG, and a 10-level Tactile Sensor into a single compact module — delivering a new digital health paradigm with fast, highly accurate readings anytime, and enabling seamless interaction across multiple apps.
You only need to tap the sensor on the right side of the watch to get these readings. You can also tap on the X-TAP sensor to get accurate blood oxygen readings in 10 seconds.
Moreover, when you press and hold the X-TAP sensor for 3 seconds, you will get a Health Glance that gives you a comprehensive report that includes your heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygen, skin temperature, and stress.
Beyond the new tactile sensor, Huawei has also added dual-band GPS to the Watch 5. This improves mapping accuracy even in difficult terrains like those with tall buildings. Moreover, unlike its predecessor, the Watch 5 is also capable of tracking your heart rate variability.
New gestures
The Huawei Watch 5 has also received new hand gesture features. It welcomes double-tap and double-slide finger gestures that will allow you to use gestures to control the watch.
Beyond these new additions, the Watch 5 like its predecessor, is equipped with an eSIM which makes it a standalone watch. As a result, it can make and receive calls without connecting to your phone. It also supports onboard music storage, though Huawei did not reveal the storage capacity, but it is likely still 32GB as the Watch 4.
Battery life
As for battery life, the Watch 5 has almost the same battery life as its predecessor. While the 42mm boasts up to 3 days of battery life in typical usage, it is up to 4.5 days for the 46mm size.
Price
In terms of price, the Watch 5, despite welcoming new features, still retails at $530 —the same price as the Watch 4. Though the Watch 4 being older will most likely have a lower price tag. Meanwhile, the 46mm size with a titanium build and the sand gold 42mm model with 904L stainless steel frame have a higher price tag of $800.
Is it a worthy upgrade?
Now back to the main question, considering the new additions, Is The Huawei Watch 5 a Worthy Upgrade From Its Predecessor?
Well, in my opinion, I think it is.
The option of 2 sizes, dual-band GPS, hand gestures, better display and the new X-TAP sensor seem like a significant leap forward.
It’s up to you to decide.
