Apple Watch Won’t Update to WatchOS 9: How to fix it

Some users have complained that their Apple Watch has refused to update to WatchOS 9, well I didn’t experience anything as such. However, if you have followed the steps in this guide and your Apple Watch has refused to update to WatchOS 9, below is a checklist of possible fixes that should solve the problem.

  • Make sure your iPhone is running on iOS 16. Go to settings>>General>>Software Update to confirm that your iPhone is running iOS 16.
  • Secondly, make sure your WiFi network is working properly.
  • If the first two steps don’t fix the problem, make sure that both your Apple Watch and iPhone are fully charged. Then try downloading and installing the update.
  • If the problem persists, ensure you have enough storage. Go to the settings app on your Apple Watch, tap on General and scroll down to storage and select it. Be sure you have at least 6GB before attempting to download and install WatchOS 9.
  • If all the above checklists are fulfilled and you still can’t download WatchOS 9, restart the Apple Watch. To restart the watch, press and hold the digital crown and physical button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo, then release your finger. Try updating your Apple Watch to WatchOS 9 again, this should fix the problem.

In conclusion, I’m really impressed with the level of functionality the WatchOS 9 delivers, it makes the Apple Watch more sophisticated, yet still very easy to use.
